The Little Engine That Could

Either the locomotive is tiny or the fireman is a giant. A worker cleans the ash from a miniature steam locomotive after a hard days work in Sapporo during the 2011 Snow Festival. The cool little engine pulled a ride-on kids train and runs on coal, just like its big, big brothers. It’s not the [...]

Marathon beat

I woke up late on Sunday, August 29th and didn’t think I’d get to catch the running of the 2010 Hokkaido Marathon. Even though the course winds through the heart of Sapporo, I forgot how long marathons actually are and how much time they take to complete. Walking near the Akarenga — the 19th century [...]

Koi canal

Japanese carp swimming in a canal in downtown Sapporo. Taken on a 2 Way Vista toy camera with panoramic setting on AGFA 35mm film, uncropped.

Shima shima

I like lines and the exterior of this tower block is an intricate grid of them. Despite the symmetry and order of the stripes and shapes, every window offers a peek at something different (mostly just curtains opened or pulled shut to varying degrees though =P). The shot of these swanky high-rise digs was taken [...]

Sapporo lo-fi

Here’s a selection of four shots snapped in Sapporo on a Fujifilm INSTAX mini 50 “Cheki” camera. Lo-fi love

Yosakoi Soran Matsuri in Sapporo

The annual Yosakoi Soran Matsuri (ヨサコイソーラン祭り) in Sapporo is an amazing spectacle. The festival celebrates Yosakoi, a unique dance style that spins traditional Japanese and contemporary influences together to create wildly energetic and beautiful performances. Yosakoi originated in Shikoku in 1954 and is now all over the place. Dance teams can range from 10 or so [...]

From the top to the bottom to the heart of Sapporo

The view from atop the Okurayama ski jump in Sapporo. Constructed in 1931 and used in during the 1972 Winter Olympics, Okurayama still hosts events today. It offers a killer panoramic view of Sapporo and jumps off straight in the direction of Odori Park smack-dab in the heart of downtown. I’ve spent a ton of [...]

This isn't a hospital!?

A nurse-themed hostess bar in Susukino, Sapporo. Considering my thing for nurses, I’m fascinated. Unfortunately as the sign alludes, the “nurses” are probably just typical hostess-style girls with a nurse’s cap and uniform on. I demand a more authentic nurse experience!
